Two Officers Injured, Brooklyn Pair Arrested After Inwood Stolen Moped Stop

Two Nassau County police officers were injured and two Brooklyn residents were arrested after a stolen moped investigation turned violent Wednesday evening in Inwood, police said.

Officers approached a man operating a moped with a female passenger near Burnside Avenue and Nassau Expressway at approximately 6:16 p.m. on July 1, according to Nassau County police.

Police said the pair became aggressive as officers conducted a Vehicle and Traffic Law investigation. The driver allegedly attempted to leave on the moped.

Nicole Demmerele, 40, of Brooklyn, was taken into custody at the scene. The driver, identified as Jason Adams, 18, also of Brooklyn, allegedly fled on foot.

The Nassau County Police Canine Unit responded to assist with the search. Adams was found nearby and arrested, police said.

Both Adams and Demmerele were violent and combative while resisting arrest, causing injuries to two officers, according to police. The officers were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Police did not provide details about the extent of their injuries.

Demmerele was also taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

Investigators later determined that the moped had been reported stolen in New York City, police said.

Adams was charged with second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property involving property allegedly valued at more than $1,000, resisting arrest, operating without a license, failing to obey a traffic-control device, violating motorcycle helmet requirements and riding between traffic lanes.

Demmerele was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

Court records show Adams is due back before Judge Anthony William Paradiso in Nassau District Court on July 7. Demmerele’s next appearance is scheduled for July 23 before the same judge. No defense attorney was listed for either defendant in the online court records.
