A Mastic man was arrested Tuesday after police said he stabbed a 71-year-old man in the neck during a road rage incident in Mastic.
Suffolk County police said the incident happened at about 9:10 a.m. May 19 on Ditmas Avenue, where two motorists were driving when a conflict developed between one driver and a passenger in a 2005 Nissan.
Both vehicles pulled over, and the passenger and the driver of the other vehicle got out, police said. After a verbal exchange, Jeremiah Giraud stabbed the other man with a knife in the neck, according to police. Giraud then returned to the Nissan, and the driver traveled west on Ditmas Avenue.
The 71-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Police broadcast a description of the suspect’s vehicle over the radio. Seventh Precinct officers later found the Nissan unoccupied in the parking lot of Family Dollar at 1600 Montauk Highway in Mastic.
Officers canvassed the store and arrested Giraud at about 10:45 a.m., according to police.
Giraud, 25, of Patchogue Avenue in Mastic, was charged with second-degree assault. He was held overnight at the Seventh Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned May 20 at First District Court in Central Islip.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
