A Laurelton man was arrested after police said he punched an Uber driver outside a Valley Stream hospital, damaged the driver’s vehicle and later bit and scratched officers while in custody.
Jonathan Sharrock, 37, was arrested following the incident at about 2:05 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, outside Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital at 900 Franklin Ave., Nassau County police said.
According to Fifth Squad detectives, a 51-year-old Uber driver was parked outside the hospital waiting for a customer when Sharrock approached him and said his car had broken down. Police said Sharrock asked to borrow the driver’s cellphone to make a call.
After the call, the driver asked for his phone back. Police said Sharrock then demanded that the driver give him a ride instead of picking up the customer he was waiting for.
When the driver refused, Sharrock allegedly began punching him in the face through the vehicle’s window. Police said the driver suffered injuries to his forehead, lip and chin.
Sharrock also allegedly damaged the Uber driver’s vehicle during the assault.
Hospital security restrained Sharrock until police arrived, according to detectives.
Police said that while officers were securing Sharrock to a stretcher, he allegedly bit and scratched them. Sharrock was then taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation.
At the hospital, Sharrock allegedly threatened police officers and hospital staff and spit at officers, police said.
Sharrock is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, third-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, making a terroristic threat and second-degree harassment.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday, Aug. 23, at First District Court in Hempstead.
