It was a simple mistake. One that took just seconds to turn into a crime.
On the night of March 13, around 10 p.m., someone left behind a wallet inside the Dollar Tree on Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. What happened next is now at the center of a police investigation.
According to Suffolk County Police, two women allegedly took the wallet instead of turning it in, then disappeared.
The theft happened inside the store at 586 Veterans Memorial Highway, a busy stretch that sees steady foot traffic even late into the evening. By the time the loss was discovered, the women were already gone.
Now, Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Fourth Squad detectives are asking the public for help identifying and locating the two suspects.
It’s the kind of moment that can happen to anyone, a wallet left behind for just a minute. But what followed has left police searching for answers, and a victim without their belongings.
