Mount Sinai Man Arrested After Woman Dragged in Port Jefferson Station Robbery

A Mount Sinai man was arrested Wednesday after police say he dragged a 64-year-old woman with his vehicle during a robbery in a Port Jefferson Station parking lot.

According to Suffolk County Police, the woman was walking in the parking lot of  TJMaxx/ShopRite at 5125 Nesconset Highway at approximately 12:55 p.m. on February 18 when a man driving a 2001 Chevrolet SUV approached her. The man allegedly exited the vehicle and grabbed her purse.

Police said the victim held onto the purse as the suspect returned to his SUV and began to drive away. She was dragged for a short distance before letting go. The woman was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, Sixth Precinct officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on County Road 83 in Selden. The SUV allegedly fled southbound before crashing on Horseblock Road, just west of CR-83, in Farmingville.

Officers arrested the driver, identified as Mark Callahan, 53, of Old Post Road in Mount Sinai. Police said Callahan sustained self-inflicted stab wounds and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sixth Squad detectives charged Callahan with Robbery in the Second Degree. He is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the robbery to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
