More Than 100 MPH: Shirley Man Charged With DWAI After Bayport Crash

A Shirley man has been arrested after Suffolk County police said he was driving more than 100 mph moments before a violent crash in Bayport that left him seriously injured and his passenger hurt.

Mario Auer, 25, was arrested Monday at the Fifth Precinct and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, and Speeding. Police said an investigation determined Auer was traveling at more than 100 mph immediately before the April 28 crash.

According to investigators, Auer was driving a 2022 BMW eastbound on Sunrise Highway, just west of Nicolls Road, at approximately 1:10 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, struck the center median and overturned. Both Auer and his passenger, Caitlyn Rose Lovelock, were ejected from the vehicle.

Lovelock, 28, of Mastic Beach, was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue with minor injuries. Auer, of Shirley, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police impounded the BMW for a safety check following the crash.
