A man charged in a Freeport assault case that also included allegations of choking and child endangerment pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, according to New York State court records.
Muhammad Ashfaq, 33, was arrested by Nassau County police on July 4, 2025, a day after the incident, according to WebCriminal records.
Ashfaq was charged with third-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury, second-degree aggravated harassment, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal obstruction of breathing.
The obstruction charge, which involves applying pressure or otherwise obstructing a person’s breathing or blood circulation, was listed as the top arrest charge in the court record.
Ashfaq pleaded not guilty at his arraignment July 4, 2025, and was released on his own recognizance.
After a series of court appearances, Ashfaq pleaded guilty to third-degree assault on March 9, 2026, court records show. The other charges remain listed with not-guilty pleas.
The case has since been repeatedly adjourned for sentencing and treatment updates.
A bench warrant was issued July 27, 2026, after a scheduled sentencing appearance. Nassau County police later featured Ashfaq in a wanted notice tied to the Freeport assault case.
Court records show the warrant was vacated Sept. 1 when Ashfaq appeared in Nassau District Court. He was released on his own recognizance.
Ashfaq is scheduled to return to court Sept. 22 before Judge Jaclene Agazarian.
