Hempstead Man Pleads Guilty in Wrong-Way LIE Crash That Seriously Injured Driver

Gavel

A Hempstead man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges after driving the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway in Roslyn while intoxicated and causing a crash that seriously injured another driver, Nassau County prosecutors said.

Jorge Arias Reyes, 50, pleaded guilty April 20 before Judge Howard Sturim to aggravated vehicular assault, a Class C felony; second-degree assault, a violent felony; and aggravated driving while intoxicated. He is due back in court on June 12 and faces a recommended sentence of 5 to 9 years in prison.

According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, the crash occurred on May 18, 2025, at approximately 7 a.m. Reyes was driving a 2009 Honda Odyssey westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 37 in Roslyn.

Prosecutors said Reyes traveled the wrong way for several miles, sideswiping one vehicle before colliding head-on with a 2014 Toyota Prius driven by a 51-year-old man.

Police arrested Reyes at approximately 7:25 a.m. at the scene.

The victim was transported to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset with serious injuries, including a fractured tibia and a dislocated hip. Reyes was also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Authorities said a blood test later revealed Reyes had a blood alcohol content of 0.26%, more than three times the legal limit.

The case is being prosecuted by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Vehicular Crimes Bureau.

Reyes is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12.
