A 66-year-old Freeport man has died after being struck in a hit-and-run crash on Merrick Road, Nassau County police said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at approximately 8:10 p.m., when the victim, later identified as Narciso Guerra Lopez, was crossing Merrick Road and was struck by an eastbound vehicle that fled the scene.
Lopez suffered severe injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Authorities later confirmed he died from those injuries.
Following an investigation, Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives arrested Michael Bonner, 40, described by police as undomiciled, in connection with the crash.
Bonner is charged with Leaving the Scene of an Incident Resulting in Death and Tampering with Physical Evidence in the second degree.
Police have not released additional details about how Bonner was identified or what evidence was allegedly tampered with.
Leaving the scene of a fatal accident is a serious felony in New York and can carry significant prison time if convicted.
Bonner was scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at First District Court in Hempstead.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
