A man was found unconscious and bleeding on a Hampton Bays roadway early Sunday morning, Nov. 1, after apparently being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, Southampton Town police said.
Police received a report at approximately 4:20 a.m. of a man lying in the roadway on North Road, across from the eastbound entrance ramp to Sunrise Highway near Canal Road.
Southampton Town patrol officers and community response officers responded to the scene. Detectives were called in because of the nature of the man’s injuries.
The man was treated at the scene by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance personnel before being airlifted by a Suffolk County helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Police said their preliminary investigation indicates the man was struck by a vehicle that left the scene.
North Road was closed for approximately four hours while detectives investigated. The Hampton Bays Fire Department and New York State Police also assisted.
Authorities have not released the pedestrian’s identity, age or updated medical condition. Police also have not identified the driver or provided a description of the vehicle involved.
No arrests or charges have been announced.
The incident occurred just three days after a separate pedestrian hit-and-run in Hampton Bays on Oct. 29. That collision happened on Old Riverhead Road West, where a driver later contacted police and reported believing he had struck a deer.
The Nov. 1 incident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Southampton Town Police Department Detective Division at 631-702-2230 or 631-728-3400.
