Elder Abuse Allegations Lead to Arrest of Home Health Aide in Lawrence

Police have arrested a Queens woman who allegedly caused serious injuries to a 96-year-old patient in her care during an incident in Lawrence, authorities announced.

According to detectives, the daytime home health aide arrived at the victim’s residence on Friday, December 5, 2025, but did not report any issues. When the nighttime aide arrived at around 6 p.m., she noticed a fresh laceration on the elderly woman and heard her complain of significant leg pain—an injury that had not been present the previous evening. The nighttime aide immediately notified the victim’s legal guardian and called 911.

Officers responded and transported the woman to a local hospital, where she was treated for a broken femur.

The victim’s legal guardian later reviewed in-home camera footage and observed the elderly woman fall. The footage also reportedly showed the daytime aide, identified as Marie Byron, 65, of Jamaica, grab the victim’s leg and shake it aggressively, causing visible distress. Investigators say Byron failed to call 911 or seek any medical assistance for the injured woman.

Following a thorough investigation, Byron was arrested without incident.

She is charged with Endangering the Welfare of an Elderly/Incompetent/Physically Disabled Person in the First Degree and Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent Physically Disabled Person in the Second Degree. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, December 8, 2025, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Authorities noted that the charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
