Hempstead Man Arrested for Daytime Bank Robbery

A Hempstead man has been arrested in connection with a bank robbery that occurred last month, according to the Major Case Squad.

Police say the incident took place on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at approximately 11:53 a.m. inside a Wells Fargo bank located at 145 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead. Detectives allege that a male suspect approached a 78-year-old female bank teller and demanded money while keeping his hand inside his pocket, simulating that he may have been armed.

Fearing for her life, the teller complied and handed over approximately $2,000 in U.S. currency. The suspect then fled the bank in an unknown direction. No injuries were reported.

Following a thorough investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Lashawn Mills, 38, of 57 Martin Luther King Drive in Hempstead. Mills was located and placed under arrest without incident.

Mills is charged with Robbery in the Second Degree and is scheduled to be arraigned on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at First District Court, located at 99 Main Street in Hempstead.

As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
