East Rockaway Man Accused Of Driving 81 MPH Before Fatal Woodmere Crash

An East Rockaway man has been indicted on manslaughter and other charges after prosecutors said he was driving more than 80 miles per hour before a crash in Woodmere that killed a father who was taking his 10-year-old son to school.

Brayan Romero Flores, 24, was arraigned May 28 on charges of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Criminally Negligent Homicide and Reckless Driving.

According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, the crash occurred on March 19, 2026, at approximately 7:53 a.m.

Prosecutors said Michael Kreindler, 39, was driving his 10-year-old son to school in a 2023 Tesla Model 3 westbound on University Place toward the intersection of Branch Boulevard in Woodmere.

At the same time, Romero Flores was allegedly driving a 2019 Honda Accord northbound on Branch Boulevard at a high rate of speed when he struck Kreindler’s vehicle as it attempted to make a left turn onto Branch Boulevard.

Both vehicles sustained severe damage in the collision.

Kreindler was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside with serious injuries. His son was also taken to the hospital and later released with minor injuries. Prosecutors said Romero Flores was treated for minor injuries and released.

Kreindler remained hospitalized and on life support for nearly three weeks before he died on April 7.

According to prosecutors, a search warrant executed on the Honda’s event data recorder revealed Romero Flores was allegedly traveling 81 miles per hour one second before the crash, more than double the posted speed limit.

Investigators also allege he applied the brakes just one second before impact and was operating the vehicle at 99% acceleration five seconds before the collision.

Prosecutors further allege dash camera footage recovered from the vehicle showed Romero Flores running a red light approximately five minutes before the crash while traveling about 77 miles per hour.

“This defendant’s actions shattered a family during a morning routine that many of us can relate to,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said. “A father was driving his 10-year-old son to school when he was blindsided by the defendant, who allegedly barreled into the victim’s car at more than double the speed limit after previously running a red light.”

Romero Flores pleaded not guilty and was remanded following his arraignment before Judge Howard Sturim.

He is due back in court on June 4.

If convicted of the top charge, he faces up to 7 to 15 years in prison.

The charges are accusations, and Romero Flores is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
