A Ronkonkoma woman was charged under Leandra’s Law after Suffolk County police said she drove while intoxicated with her 10-year-old daughter before crashing through a tennis court in Lake Ronkonkoma Tuesday afternoon.
Police said Kimberly Shortell, 41, was driving a 2025 Hyundai Sonata when she dropped her daughter off at Islip Town Beach, located at 299 Rosevale Ave., at about 3:55 p.m. on Sept. 29.
After dropping off the girl, Shortell allegedly struck a parked car, drove through a chain-link fence and onto a tennis court before crashing into another chain-link fence on the opposite side, police said.
No one was on the tennis courts at the time of the crash.
Shortell was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police charged her with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger younger than 15, a felony commonly known as Leandra’s Law. She was also charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and endangering the welfare of a child.
Shortell is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
The charges are accusations, and Shortell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
