Manorville Man Accused of Fleeing Moriches Traffic Stop With Ketamine, Injuring Deputy

A Manorville man is facing felony drug and assault charges after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop in Moriches and injuring a Suffolk County deputy sheriff during his arrest, authorities said.

According to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducting a ghost plate enforcement detail stopped a white Ford E-350 at approximately 8:15 p.m. on May 14 after observing it displaying a California license plate and no front plate.

Deputies determined the vehicle was allegedly unregistered, uninsured, uninspected and displaying improper license plates. As deputies were issuing summonses, the driver, identified as 34-year-old Bashir Shekid of Manorville, allegedly fled the traffic stop.

Authorities said deputies later located the vehicle and apprehended Shekid.

During the arrest, a deputy sheriff suffered injuries after Shekid allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted the officer, according to investigators. The deputy’s injuries were not described as serious.

Following the arrest, investigators searched the vehicle and recovered a white powdery substance that tested positive for approximately 260,000 milligrams of ketamine, according to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau.

Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. said ghost plates are frequently used to conceal criminal activity and evade law enforcement.

“Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep our roads and communities safe,” Toulon said in a statement. “Ghost plates are often used to conceal criminal activity and evade law enforcement, making this task force so important.”

Prosecutors charged Shekid with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree and Assault in the Second Degree, along with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs with a prior conviction within 10 years. He also faces misdemeanor charges including Obstructing Governmental Administration, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Reckless Driving, as well as multiple traffic violations.

The charges against Shekid are accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
