A woman found dead in the Long Island Sound off Lloyd Harbor earlier this week has been identified as a missing Oyster Bay resident. The victim, Brittany Kritis-Garip, 32, of Oyster Bay, was recovered from the water near Lloyd Harbor Road at approximately 7:45 p.m. on April 13, according to police.
Detectives now believe her death is non-criminal in nature. The official cause of death remains pending an examination by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police were initially called to the scene after a 911 caller reported a body floating in the water. Responding officers recovered the body of an adult female, later identified as Kritis-Garip.
Her death comes weeks after she was reported missing under concerning circumstances.
According to Nassau County police, Kritis-Garip was last seen on March 20 at approximately 8 p.m. in Oyster Bay. She was reported missing shortly after.
Family members had described her as a “vulnerable” person who may have been disoriented and frightened at the time she disappeared. Relatives urged residents to check private properties, including sheds, garages, and other secluded areas where she may have sought shelter.
Her brother, Niko Kritis, said the family believed she may have been attempting to isolate or avoid contact. He also asked the public to review home surveillance footage and report anything unusual.
Authorities said Kritis-Garip had left a vehicle unexpectedly the night she went missing and was last seen on foot. Her wallet was later recovered in Oyster Bay, and family members said she had abandoned her phone.
In the weeks following her disappearance, search efforts expanded across Oyster Bay and surrounding communities, with volunteers organizing search parties and a fundraiser launched to support efforts, including hiring a private investigator.
Police have not released further details about how Kritis-Garip entered the water or where she may have been in the time between her disappearance and the discovery of her body.
The investigation remains ongoing.
