It was a normal evening at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station. Shoppers moved in and out of Macy’s, browsing racks and heading to checkout. But somewhere inside the store, police say, a man made a decision that would put him on Suffolk County Crime Stoppers’ radar.
According to investigators, the suspect entered Macy’s at 180 Walt Whitman Road on February 16 at around 7 p.m. What appeared to be routine shopping quickly turned into something else.
Police say the man selected assorted clothing items but instead of paying, he walked out of the store with the merchandise.
By the time anyone realized what had happened, he was gone.
Now, weeks later, Suffolk County Police and Crime Stoppers are asking the public for help identifying him. Surveillance images are expected to play a key role in tracking him down, as detectives work to piece together his movements before and after the theft.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Suffolk County Crime Stoppers. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 1-800-220-TIPS, through the P3 Tips mobile app, or online at P3Tips.com. A cash reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
