A Sound Beach man has been convicted in the fatal shooting of a Bohemia homeowner during an attempted burglary in 2022, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Christopher Fernandez, 29, was found guilty by a jury of second-degree murder and several other charges for his role in the shooting death of Michael Hartmann, 49, at Hartmann’s home.
Prosecutors said the incident occurred on November 2, 2022, at approximately 6:36 a.m., when Fernandez and an accomplice, Oliver Schor, both armed with guns, went to Hartmann’s residence. Fernandez allegedly believed a cellphone that had been stolen from him was pinging near the home.
According to trial evidence, the two men attempted to enter the house through the back door when they encountered Hartmann on the back deck. One of the defendants opened fire, shooting Hartmann multiple times before the pair fled the scene.
Hartmann was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later determined the suspects had gone to the wrong home in a case of mistaken identity.
Prosecutors also said Fernandez threatened an employee at a Manorville gas station shortly before the shooting.
On March 6, 2026, a jury convicted Fernandez of multiple charges, including second-degree murder, attempted burglary in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal use of a firearm in the second degree and petit larceny.
Fernandez is scheduled to return to court on April 8, 2026, for sentencing. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
His co-defendant, Oliver Schor, still has a pending case related to the incident.
