Wyandanch man arrested in attempted Muttontown elder scam, police say

MUTTONTOWN, N.Y. — A Wyandanch man was arrested after Nassau County police said detectives caught him trying to collect money from a 79-year-old woman targeted in an elder scam in Muttontown.

Richard Francisco Perozo Rodriguez, 28, was arrested at about 9:05 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, according to Nassau County police.

Detectives said the woman received a telephone call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller told her that her daughter had been arrested and needed cash for bail.

The woman eventually realized she was being scammed and contacted police.

Following an investigation, detectives arrested Rodriguez as he allegedly attempted to pick up the payment, police said.

Rodriguez, of Wyandanch, was charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. He was scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 19 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Detectives asked anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Rodriguez to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
