A West Islip man was arrested after New York State Police said he struck and killed a 27-year-old man who was on the shoulder of the Robert Moses Causeway in Islip Thursday afternoon.
According to State Police, troopers responded at approximately 1:38 p.m. on June 25 to the southbound Robert Moses Causeway near Exit RM2 after receiving a report of an unconscious man on the shoulder of the roadway.
When troopers arrived, they found Yusuf Gul, 27, of Bay Shore, deceased. Investigators determined he had been struck by a vehicle.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that Stephen M. Aylward, 63, of West Islip, was operating a 2012 Jeep when he struck Gul while Gul was on the shoulder of the roadway.
Aylward was arrested and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by the Combined Influence of Drugs or Alcohol and Drugs, an unclassified misdemeanor.
He was scheduled to be arraigned on the morning of June 26.
