Two Drivers Busted After Street Race Near Smith Point Bridge

Two drivers were busted after Suffolk County police said they were caught taking part in an illegal street race early Tuesday in Shirley.

Police said a Seventh Precinct patrol officer spotted a 2019 Ford Mustang and a 2023 Dodge Charger racing southbound on William Floyd Parkway at about 12:50 a.m. May 26.

When the officer tried to pull the vehicles over, both drivers allegedly sped away. The vehicles continued south over the Smith Point Bridge before additional police units stopped them, according to police.

Police identified the Mustang driver as Halee Salomon, 22, of Queens. The Charger driver was identified as Jake Roth, 29, of Lake Ronkonkoma.

Both drivers were charged with unlawful speed contest, third-degree unlawful fleeing, reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.

They were issued field appearance tickets and are scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.

Police said both vehicles were seized and will remain impounded as evidence. The vehicles may also be subject to forfeiture under local ordinance.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
