Good news, Whovians! The Doctor is definitely not going anywhere. The BBC has officially confirmed that Doctor Who will return with a brand-new Christmas special in 2026, written once again by showrunner Russell T Davies.
While Disney+ has announced it won’t be partnering with the BBC on the next season, the network made it clear that the Doctor’s adventures through time and space remain one of its “most loved dramas.” BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt reassured fans, saying, “We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course.”
The 2026 Christmas special, produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios, will continue the show’s holiday tradition and arrives after this year’s highly anticipated spinoff show The War Between the Land and the Sea, which lands on BBC One and iPlayer later in 2025. Younger fans can also look forward to a new Doctor Who animated series currently in development for CBeebies.
