Long Island BBQ Spot Offers Free Meals Amid SNAP Cuts, Promises Thanksgiving Help

As millions of Americans prepare to lose access to federal food benefits next week, one Long Island restaurant is stepping up to help.

Struggletown BBQ, the Mount Sinai barbecue spot known for its food truck-turned-restaurant success story, announced Sunday on its Facebook page that it will offer free meals to anyone affected by the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), beginning November 1.

“Any person who is currently receiving SNAP benefits can stop in our restaurant in Mount Sinai and you and any children with you will receive one free pulled pork or pulled chicken sandwich and a beverage,” the post read. “No questions asked. Just show your SNAP card and an ID.”

The restaurant’s owners, father and son John and Jake Leonard, said the offer will remain in place “until further notice or whenever the SNAP program is reinstated.” The pair added that if the shutdown continues into the holidays, they will provide free Thanksgiving meals to affected families.

“If the SNAP program is still shut down by the time Thanksgiving arrives, we will provide a free Thanksgiving meal to any family who has lost their benefits and needs assistance putting a Thanksgiving meal on the table,” the post continued. “Just contact the store and ask for John.”

The announcement comes amid growing concern over food insecurity as federal funding interruptions loom ahead of the holiday season. “It is hopeful that this will be a temporary situation, but nonetheless it is coming at a difficult time,” the post said. “Nobody should go without food.”

Located at 1028 Route 25A in Mount Sinai, Struggletown BBQ is best known for its wood-fired smoked meats and community-driven spirit. The Leonards launched the business as a food truck in 2022 before expanding to their first brick-and-mortar location last December.

John Leonard, a former attorney who turned his backyard barbecue hobby into a full-fledged family business, told LongIslandRestaurants.com that Struggletown has always been about connection. “Family and friends of family,” he said. “We’re moving up in the world.”

The restaurant’s latest gesture continues that ethos, this time reaching beyond customers to neighbors in need.
