It happened in the quiet morning hours, just as people were starting their day along the narrow streets of Atlantic Beach.
Around 7:46 a.m. Tuesday, a 67-year-old woman was driving a 2019 Honda HR-V eastbound on Beech Street near Scott Drive when everything changed in an instant. According to detectives, her vehicle struck a bicyclist.
But instead of stopping, she kept going.
The cyclist, an unidentified man, was left in the roadway. By the time first responders from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived, it was already too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
For residents in this tight-knit beachside community, it is the kind of moment that sends a chill through familiar streets. A routine morning turned fatal in seconds.
Then came the turning point.
Investigators from Nassau County Police, working alongside Long Beach Police, began piecing together what happened. Surveillance, vehicle tracking, and investigative work led them to the car and the person behind the wheel.
Hours later, police found the vehicle and arrested the driver.
Erin M. Henry, 67, of West Broadway in Long Beach, was taken into custody without incident.
She now faces charges for leaving the scene of a crash that caused a death. Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing.
As with all criminal cases, the charge is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
