A Patchogue man has been indicted on attempted murder and burglary charges after prosecutors say he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and repeatedly stabbed her 22-year-old son while the victim was sleeping.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Robert Schreiber, 42, was arraigned April 30 on a multi-count indictment tied to the April 18 attack inside a Patchogue residence.
According to investigators, Schreiber’s long-term girlfriend ended their relationship the day before the incident and locked him out of the home. At approximately 8 a.m. the following morning, Schreiber allegedly entered the house through an unlocked window while occupants were asleep.
Prosecutors say he went to the victim’s bedroom, kicked in the door, and stabbed the 22-year-old seven times in the head, neck, and shoulder.
Family members intervened during the attack and called 911, allowing the victim to escape downstairs. Responding officers found the injured man, who was transported to NYU Langone Hospital, where he received multiple staples to treat his wounds.
Schreiber was arrested at the scene and allegedly found in possession of the knife used in the attack.
He is charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Burglary in the First Degree, both Class B violent felonies, along with additional charges including attempted assault, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, and harassment.
Authorities described the incident as a domestic violence case that escalated following the end of a relationship.
If convicted of the top charge, Schreiber faces up to 25 years in prison.
He was ordered held on $100,000 cash, $1 million bond, or $1 million partially secured bond. Schreiber is due back in court on May 28, 2026.
The case is being prosecuted by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau.
Schreiber is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
