Mineola Chemistry Experiment Sparks Apartment Fire, Police Find Unstable Explosive Mixtures

A Mineola man was arrested after police said a chemistry experiment inside his apartment reacted violently, sparked a fire and led investigators to discover unstable explosive mixtures and laboratory equipment.

Nolan Gaugler, 34, was arrested following the incident at 125 Lincoln Ave. at about 2:38 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, Nassau County police said.

According to police, an unknown chemistry experiment inside Gaugler’s third-floor apartment reacted violently. Investigators allege Gaugler then took the mixture into the hallway and threw it, causing a fire that damaged the hallway and floor.

Residents of the building were temporarily evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Police said members of the Arson Bomb Squad subsequently searched the apartment and found a large quantity of chemicals and laboratory equipment. Investigators said some of the mixtures were determined to be unstable and explosive.

The hazardous materials were removed from the apartment for disposal, police said.

Gaugler was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, fourth-degree arson and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
