Man Arrested After 29-Year-Old Shot in Leg Outside Mastic Beach Gas Station

A 48-year-old man was arrested after police said he shot another man in the leg during a dispute outside a Mastic Beach gas station early Sunday morning.

Suffolk County police said Sammie Darby and a 29-year-old man became involved in a verbal dispute inside the Track Gas Station market at 310 Neighborhood Road at about 1:18 a.m. Aug. 23.

The two men were asked to leave the business but continued arguing outside, where police said Darby shot the 29-year-old in the leg.

The victim was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police arrested Darby a short time later. Police described the 48-year-old as undomiciled.

Darby was charged with second-degree assault and was held overnight at the Suffolk County Police Department’s Sixth Precinct.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 24 at First District Court in Central Islip.

The charge is an accusation, and Darby is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
