A Lake Ronkonkoma man was arrested Monday after police said he drove through a red light in Nesconset and struck three construction workers, killing one and seriously injuring two others.
Thomas Lobianco, 26, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs following the Aug. 10 crash at Townline Road and Terry Road, according to Suffolk County Police.
Police said Lobianco was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry eastbound in the westbound lane of Townline Road at about 6:40 a.m. when he drove through a red light at Terry Road.
The Camry then went onto the sidewalk and struck three construction workers who were preparing for a paving project, police said.
After striking the workers, the car hit an electronic crossing sign, a utility pole and a fence, according to police.
All three workers were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Joel Sicon-Porix, 38, of Mastic, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Kevin Chavez-Sarmiento, 30, of Bay Shore, and Jose Gonzalez-Colindres, 33, of Brentwood, were admitted with serious injuries, police said.
Lobianco, of Lake Ronkonkoma, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. Police said he was being held at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, Aug. 11, at First District Court in Central Islip.
