Jericho Woman Accused of Setting Pillowcase on Fire at Motel

A 54-year-old Jericho woman was arrested early Monday after police said she was seen on security video carrying a burning pillowcase out of her room at the Inn at Jericho.

Nassau County police said officers responded to the inn at 101 Jericho Turnpike at about 2:37 a.m. on Aug. 10 following a report of a disturbance.

According to Arson Bomb Squad detectives, an employee watching a live security camera saw Crystal Alston exit her room holding a pillowcase that was on fire and throw it on the floor. Police said Alston then returned to her room.

The employee extinguished the fire and called police.

Following an investigation, officers took Alston into custody without incident, police said. A Nassau County Police Department ambulance transported her to a local hospital for evaluation.

Alston was charged with attempted second-degree arson and fifth-degree arson.

She was scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Aug. 10, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
