It started as a quiet Saturday morning in Great Neck until a black Jeep began circling near several houses of worship, breaking the calm in a way no one expected.
Around 10:48 a.m., along Middle Neck Road near Millbrook Court, religious services were underway. Inside, people gathered for prayer. Outside, something was unfolding that would quickly disrupt that sense of peace.
According to police, a man driving through the area began yelling out of his vehicle as he passed multiple houses of worship. The shouting was loud enough and targeted enough to interrupt services happening inside.
What should have been a routine morning quickly turned tense.
Officers responded to reports of the disturbance and began investigating what had happened. The vehicle, a black Jeep, became the key detail. From there, police worked to identify the driver responsible for the disruptions.
That’s when the case took a turn.
After tracking down the vehicle and its driver, officers located 34-year-old Bilal Kayani of Elmont and placed him under arrest without incident.
Kayani is now charged with two counts of Disruption of a Religious Service. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
Authorities have not released additional details about what was shouted or whether the incidents were connected to a specific motive.
As with all cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
