OCEAN BEACH, Fire Island — A shed fire that spread toward a nearby home in Ocean Beach on Fire Island on Friday afternoon prompted a multi-agency response, with dramatic photos capturing police marine units and firefighters working to contain the flames.
The fire broke out at approximately 3:30 p.m. at a property on Bay Walk, according to Suffolk County Police. Officers from the Ocean Beach Police Department responded first and requested additional assistance as the fire began spreading.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau units, including Marine Alpha, Juliette, Marine 1 and Marine 3, responded and deployed pumps and fire hoses to douse the flames and prevent further spread in the densely built Fire Island community. Aviation Section officers also responded, identifying potential hot spots from above to assist crews on the ground.
Multiple Suffolk County police officers were treated for smoke inhalation. No civilians were reported injured.

The fire originated in a shed next to the home, authorities said. Suffolk County Police Arson Unit detectives are continuing the investigation, but the cause is believed to be non-criminal.
The response underscores the unique challenges of emergency operations on Fire Island, where limited road access often requires marine units to assist in firefighting efforts.
The investigation remains ongoing.
