Brooklyn man arrested in Baldwin elder scam involving $20,000 withdrawal

A Brooklyn man was arrested after a 68-year-old Baldwin man withdrew $20,000 from his bank as part of an alleged elder scam, Nassau County police said.

Biaodi Jiang, 50, was arrested Monday, Sept. 21, after an investigation by the Nassau County Police Department’s Electronic Squad and Fraud and Forgery Section.

Police said the victim received a message on his computer at about 10:30 a.m. claiming the device had been compromised. He called a phone number displayed on the screen and was told he needed to withdraw his money from the bank to protect it.

The man withdrew $20,000, but then suspected he was being scammed and contacted police, authorities said.

Detectives later located Jiang and arrested him without incident.

Jiang was charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny and was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, Sept. 22, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Police urged residents to warn vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential scams and fraud. Anyone who believes they may have been a victim can contact the Nassau County Fraud and Forgery Section at 516-573-2815 or call 911.
