PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. — A 40-foot boat moored in Port Jefferson Harbor caught fire overnight Thursday, according to the Port Jefferson Fire Department.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the department said Marine 6, along with units from the Setauket and Stony Brook fire departments, responded to the blaze on the harbor’s west side. The vessel was unoccupied and tied to a mooring at the time of the fire.

“Fire suppression efforts included onboard monitors as well as foam operations via hand lines,” the department wrote. It noted that tidal current, wind and heavy rains complicated the response.

The fire was eventually brought under control without injuries. However, officials said the boat suffered extensive damage and sank stern-first. The bow remains visible above the waterline.

Authorities did not immediately release the cause of the fire.
