Bethpage Woman Finds Possible WWII-Era Grenade While Cleaning Basement

A 60-year-old woman cleaning the basement of her Bethpage home discovered what police said may have been a World War II-style grenade Wednesday morning.

Nassau County police said the suspicious item was found at about 10:53 a.m. on Aug. 5.

Responding officers secured the scene and called the Nassau County Emergency Services Unit and Arson Bomb Squad detectives.

Bomb squad detectives examined the item and determined that it potentially was a WWII-style grenade, according to police. Detectives secured the device and removed it from the residence.

The item was taken to a safe location and destroyed.

Police said there is no further risk to the public.

The investigation remains ongoing.
