A 26-year-old Bay Shore man was arrested on a drunken driving charge after police said he drove his car off a pier in Sayville and into Great South Bay early Sunday morning.

Nicholas Volpicelli was charged with driving while intoxicated following the Nov. 1 incident at Sayville Marina Park, located at 400 Foster Avenue, according to Suffolk County Police.

Officers responded around 6 a.m. after receiving a report that a vehicle had gone off the pier.

Police said Volpicelli was driving a Toyota Camry when the vehicle plunged into the bay, coming to rest approximately 50 feet offshore, partially submerged.

Volpicelli managed to escape the vehicle and return to shore without assistance.

He was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue for evaluation. No injuries were reported.

Police subsequently arrested Volpicelli and charged him with driving while intoxicated.
