A North Bellport man has been indicted for allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash that killed a pedestrian in Bay Shore, Suffolk County prosecutors said Friday.
Andrew Holmes-Garriques, 27, is accused of striking 37-year-old Korey Klein of Bellport as he walked along the Sunrise Highway South Service Road at about 1:15 a.m. on February 13, 2026. Authorities allege Holmes-Garriques drove off without stopping, rendering aid, or reporting the crash.
According to the investigation, Holmes-Garriques was operating a 2008 Mercedes-Benz eastbound when he allegedly hit Klein from behind, scattering debris across the roadway. Prosecutors say he left the scene and did not contact law enforcement.
Hours later, at approximately 5:15 a.m., Holmes-Garriques allegedly returned to the area. A passenger in his vehicle called 911, prompting a response from Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, which pronounced Klein dead at the scene.
Suffolk County police officers who responded found Holmes-Garriques seated in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Investigators said they detected a strong odor of marijuana and that he performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests. He was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while impaired by drugs. Authorities also determined his driver’s license had been suspended at the time of the crash.
Surveillance footage obtained during the investigation allegedly shows the Mercedes without damage shortly before the incident. Additional video reportedly shows the same vehicle later with a damaged driver’s-side headlight, hours before the 911 call was made.
Holmes-Garriques was arraigned May 1 before Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro on charges of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, a Class D felony; driving while impaired by drugs; and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree.
He was ordered held on $75,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond, or $500,000 partially secured bond.
If convicted on the top charge, Holmes-Garriques faces up to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison.
He is scheduled to return to court on June 1, 2026. The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
