A Long Beach man was sentenced to 22 years in prison Friday for attacking a former coworker with an ax in a 2025 ambush that left the victim with life-threatening injuries, prosecutors said.

Anthony Calvo, 35, pleaded guilty on March 20, 2026, to attempted murder in the second degree, a violent felony. Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced the sentence.

According to prosecutors, the attack occurred on February 13, 2025, at approximately 5:50 a.m. The 60-year-old victim had just finished his overnight shift as a taxi dispatcher for Long Beach Taxi and was walking home along Arizona Avenue.

Authorities said Calvo approached the victim from behind and struck him multiple times with an ax, hitting his head, face, and arm. The assault was described as targeted and tied to a prior workplace dispute. Calvo had previously worked as a driver for the same taxi company before leaving in 2022.

Despite his injuries, the victim managed to reach the rear yard of his home and bang on the door for help. A family member called 911, and Long Beach police responded to the scene. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries for serious head and jaw injuries.

Investigators later recovered surveillance footage showing the suspect fleeing on a white electric bicycle while wearing dark clothing. A search warrant executed at Calvo’s apartment on February 19, 2025, led to the recovery of a white e-bike and a full-face mask believed to be used in the attack.

Calvo was arrested on March 12, 2025, by Long Beach police.

Prosecutors said the victim continues to face a long recovery and requires ongoing medical care as a result of the injuries.

Attempted murder in the second degree is classified as a violent felony under New York law and carries a significant prison sentence. In this case, Calvo will serve more than two decades behind bars.
