An Islip woman was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated after crashing into an ambulance that was preparing to transport an injured man in Bay Shore early Sunday morning, Suffolk County Police said.

Edith Cairo, 32, was driving a 2017 Honda Accord when she struck an Islip Fire Department ambulance on Main Street, just east of 3rd Avenue, at approximately 2:15 a.m. on October 18, police said.

At the time of the crash, emergency personnel were loading an injured 26-year-old Islip man into the back of the ambulance, which had its emergency lights activated.

A second ambulance was dispatched to transport the patient to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Third Precinct officers determined that Cairo was intoxicated and arrested her at the scene, police said.

Cairo was charged with driving while intoxicated and held at the Third Precinct pending arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on October 18.

The charge is an accusation, and Cairo is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
