A Lake Ronkonkoma man has been indicted on a murder charge after allegedly stabbing his 69-year-old father about 40 times as the victim called 911 from his Mastic apartment, prosecutors said.
Sage Arias-Brown, 33, was indicted on one count of second-degree murder in the Sept. 7 death of his father, Edward Brown, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.
Prosecutors said Arias-Brown entered his father’s studio apartment in Mastic at about 12:30 a.m. A neighbor heard a loud bang followed by Brown screaming.
Brown was able to call 911 during the attack. According to prosecutors, the call captured him screaming, “I’m being murdered. What are you doing to me, Sage?”
The neighbor allegedly saw Arias-Brown leave the apartment several minutes after the call was placed.
Suffolk County police responding to the scene found Arias-Brown walking about half a mile from the apartment and arrested him, prosecutors said.
Officers entered the apartment and found Brown unresponsive and covered in blood. An autopsy determined that he had been stabbed approximately 40 times in the torso, chest and neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This defendant is accused of viciously taking the life of his 69-year-old father as the victim desperately called the police for help,” Tierney said. “The facts in this case are heartbreaking.”
Arias-Brown was arraigned Sept. 17 before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz and was ordered held during the case.
He is due back in court Oct. 21 and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier of the Homicide Bureau. Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad Detective James Hughes conducted the investigation.
Arias-Brown is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
