Home Health Aide Charged With Stealing $10K in Jewelry From East Setauket Mother and Daughter

A home health aide has been charged with stealing nearly $10,000 worth of jewelry from an 80-year-old East Setauket woman and her 58-year-old daughter, Suffolk County police said.

According to police, Jackquilin Smith, 40, was employed by Homewatch CareGivers and was providing care for the women when she allegedly stole jewelry valued at approximately $9,850 from the residence between late April and late May.

The theft was discovered after family members noticed jewelry missing and contacted police.

Following an investigation by Sixth Squad detectives and Sixth Precinct Investigative Unit officers, Smith was arrested Friday at her residence in Medford.

Smith, 40, was charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree. Police said she was being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned June 20 at First District Court in Central Islip.

Detectives are asking anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Smith to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
