An Oceanside man was arrested on drunken driving and vehicular assault charges after police said he struck a 78-year-old woman who was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk Thursday afternoon.
According to Nassau County police, the incident happened at approximately 4:41 p.m. on June 18 at the intersection of Long Beach Road and Weidner Avenue in Oceanside.
Detectives said the 78-year-old victim was walking across the roadway in the crosswalk when she was hit by a 2004 Chevrolet Express van operated by Niall Duignan, 24, of Oceanside.
The woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she remains listed in critical condition.
Following an investigation at the scene, police determined that Duignan was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody without incident.
Duignan has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Vehicular Assault in the Second Degree.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, June 19, at First District Court in Hempstead.
The investigation remains ongoing.
