Mt. Sinai Man Charged with DWI After Crash Leaves Passenger Seriously Injured

A Mt. Sinai man was arrested early Saturday after police say he crashed his vehicle into a tree while driving intoxicated, leaving his passenger with serious injuries.

According to Suffolk County Police, Timothy Neff, 35, was driving a 2018 Ford Fusion eastbound on Chelsea Drive at a high rate of speed at approximately 3:10 a.m. on April 11 when he mounted a curb and struck a tree in front of 31 Chelsea Drive. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn.

Sixth Precinct officers and members of the Emergency Service Section responded to the scene and extricated Neff and his passenger, identified as Stephanie Bortnowsky, 38, of Mt. Sinai.

Bortnowsky was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious physical injuries. Neff was also taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Neff was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check as part of the ongoing investigation.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652.

Neff is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
