Suffolk County police are increasing patrols across Long Island following a violent machete attack that injured three elderly people inside Grand Central Terminal on Saturday morning.

The Suffolk County Police Department said it is coordinating with regional law enforcement partners after the incident, which unfolded on a subway platform shortly before 10 a.m.

According to reports, a 44-year-old man carried out an unprovoked attack, slashing an 85-year-old man and a 65-year-old man in the head, and injuring a 70-year-old woman. All three victims were transported to hospitals and are expected to survive.

Police in New York City confronted the suspect after he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and advanced toward officers while armed with a machete. Officers then opened fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities said the man had a prior criminal history, including multiple arrests.

The incident triggered a large emergency response inside the busy transit hub and prompted an ongoing investigation, including a review of the officers’ use of force.

Suffolk County police emphasized that there are currently no credible threats to Long Island but said the department is taking precautionary steps. Patrols will be increased at what officials described as vulnerable locations across the county.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 911.

The investigation into the attack remains ongoing.
