An arrest has been made nearly five years after a brutal acid attack left Nafiah Ikram, a young Elmont woman, permanently scarred and partially blind, Nassau County police said.

Fifth Squad detectives announced the arrest of Terrell Campbell, 29, of Brooklyn, in connection with the March 17, 2021 assault that occurred outside Ikram’s home on Arlington Avenue in Elmont.

According to police, Ikram, who was 21 at the time, was walking in the driveway of her residence around 8:15 p.m. when she was approached from behind by an unknown man carrying a white cup filled with a dark liquid. The suspect threw the substance into her face before fleeing eastbound on Arlington Avenue.

Ikram suffered serious physical injuries and was transported by police ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators later determined the substance was a corrosive chemical. The attack caused severe burns and permanent disfigurement, and left Ikram blind in one eye. In the years following the assault, she underwent multiple surgeries and publicly criticized authorities over what she described as a lack of progress in the case.

Campbell was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault in the First Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, and Unlawfully Possessing Noxious Matter. He was arraigned Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at First District Court in Hempstead.

The case drew national attention at the time, with federal and local authorities previously releasing surveillance images and offering a substantial reward for information leading to an arrest.

The charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
