Two Nassau County police officers suffered minor injuries while arresting an allegedly intoxicated driver who became combative and spat at officers in Lawrence early Sunday morning, police said.
Luis Chiguano Cuchiparte, 35, of Brooklyn, was arrested following the incident at about 5:48 a.m. July 26 near Nassau Expressway and Rock Hall Road.
Fourth Precinct officers had been dispatched after receiving a report of a vehicle stopped near the intersection with its driver appearing to be asleep, according to Nassau County police.
When officers attempted to wake the driver of the red Hyundai Santa Fe, Cuchiparte allegedly became combative and spat at them, police said.
Police said he remained violent and resisted arrest, leaving two officers with minor injuries. Both officers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Cuchiparte was eventually taken into custody, and an investigation determined that he was intoxicated, according to police. He was also transported to a hospital for an assessment.
Cuchiparte is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, driving while intoxicated, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, second-degree harassment, having open containers of alcohol in a vehicle and a traffic violation.
Cuchiparte was arraigned Monday before Nassau District Court Judge William Bodkin and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Bail was set at $5,000 cash, $10,000 insured bond or $25,000 partially secured surety bond. Court records do not indicate whether bail was posted.
He is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, driving while intoxicated, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, second-degree harassment, having an open container in a vehicle and stopping, standing or parking on a highway.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, for indictment-control proceedings.
