Two people were found dead early Sunday after a fire tore through a boarded-up house in Hempstead that had previously been damaged in another blaze, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to multiple 911 calls reporting flames at 45 Sycamore Ave. shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday. When crews arrived, the house was already fully engulfed, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
About 75 firefighters from 10 Nassau County departments responded to help battle the fire, which was brought under control in roughly two hours.
During firefighting operations, crews discovered two bodies inside the structure.
Officials said the home had been boarded up following an earlier fire in October 2025 and was believed to be vacant. The identities of the victims have not been released.
Investigators said the fire does not currently appear suspicious, though the investigation remains active. Nassau County fire marshals, Nassau police arson detectives, and bomb squad detectives responded to the scene.
No other injuries were reported, including among firefighters.
