Free Comic Book Day draws big crowds bringing people to shops who might not normally come in or bringing people together all at once on one big day for free comics, incredible discounts & deals, special events, and comic book industry guests to Long Island outlets.
John at Grasshopper’s Comics says the crowds on Free Comic Book Day can get pretty big.
“The crowds get unmanageable very quickly,” he said.
A Grasshopper’s, they usually reserve big guests and signings for their charity event for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation every December. (So put that on your radar)
“We really try to make Free Comic Book Day very kid friendly,” John said. “We’ll have Darth Vader appearing.”
Free Comic Book Day is also May the 4th so look for various shops to have Star Wars themed events planned as well – there is a Star Wars book available from Marvel.
Generally stores will limit the number of books per person from the free catalog, which you can find here.

Escape Pod Comics
Escape Pod Comics is closed on Saturdays so they won’t be open that day but they will be hosting their 11th Free Comic Book (Sun)Day on May 5th this year.
“We will have local creators Josh Hixson, Joe Ciano, and Andrew Kranke signing at the shop,” said owner Menachem Luchins. “We will have a sale as well as three free comics per person (five if you come in costume) and our friends at Catpurrcinno Cat Cafe down the block, will be hosting writer Colleen Venable (author of Katie the Cat-sitter, which has a FCBD comic) at their spot which will be hosting an adoption day as well.”
