A West Islip woman was arrested Tuesday after Suffolk County police said she embezzled more than $385,000 from her West Babylon employer over a five-year period.
Patricia Sparby, 66, of Udall Road, was charged with second-degree grand larceny following an investigation by Suffolk County Police Financial Crimes Unit detectives and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Financial Crimes Bureau, police said.
According to police, Sparby worked as a bookkeeper for R & J Display Inc., located at 96 Otis St. in West Babylon. Investigators said she wrote checks to herself totaling $385,424.36 between January 2019 and August 2024.
Police said the alleged fraud was discovered during an internal audit of bank statements in 2025.
Sparby was arrested May 19 at 6:35 a.m. and was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
A criminal charge is an accusation, and Sparby is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
