Valley Stream Man Accused of Robbing and Assaulting 59-Year-Old Outside Elmont Deli

A Valley Stream man was arrested after Nassau County police said he assaulted and robbed a 59-year-old man outside an Elmont deli Monday night.

According to Fifth Squad detectives, the incident occurred at approximately 8:01 p.m. on June 8 in front of Elmont Deli and Convenience, located at 237-01 Linden Boulevard.

Police said the victim was standing outside the business when he became involved in an argument with an unknown man. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly punched the victim in the face multiple times, knocking him to the ground.

Detectives said the attacker then kicked the victim, dragged him across the concrete and took the victim’s cell phone from the ground before fleeing eastbound on Linden Boulevard.

Following an investigation, police identified and arrested Jason Gayle, 45, of Valley Stream.

A Nassau County Police medic responded to the scene and evaluated the victim. The victim declined transportation to a hospital, police said.

Gayle was charged with third-degree robbery.

He was scheduled to be arraigned June 9 at First District Court in Hempstead.
