A Swedish national was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for attempting to smuggle 10 kilograms of cocaine into Suffolk County through packages shipped from California, prosecutors said.
Amanda Abrahamsson, 26, of Sweden, pleaded guilty in April to first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A-I felony, after admitting she acted as a drug courier, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney’s office.
Prosecutors said the case began in August 2024, when two packages containing individually wrapped kilograms of cocaine were shipped from California to Suffolk County through a FedEx facility. Law enforcement intercepted the packages after they were flagged at the facility.
Investigators later learned that a woman, identified as Abrahamsson, went to a FedEx location in Bohemia to ask about the packages. Prosecutors said a woman also called FedEx to track the packages and provided a callback number.
Law enforcement contacted the woman and arranged for the packages to be picked up at a Walgreens in Patchogue.
On Sept. 3, 2024, Abrahamsson arrived at the Walgreens and took possession of the packages from an undercover officer, prosecutors said. She was immediately arrested.
At the time of her arrest, Abrahamsson had two cellphones, one of which was used to communicate with FedEx and law enforcement, according to prosecutors. After her arrest, she gave investigators a written confession admitting her role in the drug distribution, officials said.
Tierney said Abrahamsson came from outside Suffolk County to commit the crime and believed she could avoid detection.
“She clearly underestimated the capability of the Suffolk County Police Department and our partners at Homeland Security Investigations to track her down and intercept these dangerous drugs before they hit our streets,” Tierney said.
Abrahamsson pleaded guilty on April 3 before Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei. She was sentenced May 8 to 10 years in prison.
Federal immigration authorities have lodged a detainer to deport Abrahamsson to Sweden after she serves her sentence, prosecutors said.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Dana Gremaux of the Narcotics Bureau. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Suffolk County Police Department.
